- Review the language exchange's participation rules with each language partner.
- Decide how long each language will be spoken (we recommend that an equal amount of time be devoted to each language, if possible!).
- Make sure you are aware of the level of your partner’s language skills and be considerate of those levels.
- Be aware, kind, and considerate! Adapt the nature and speed of conversations to your partner’s language levels.
- Decide whether you want your partner to correct your errors and agree on a way for them to do so
- Ask the meaning of words you do not understand. This is a learning opportunity!
- Take notes so that you can write down new words or use drawings to help explain words.
- Try to avoid resorting to translation apps; use context clues, drawings, or other words to get your point across.
