Use this guide to determine the best way for you to integrate librarians into your instruction

WHAT IS LIBRARY INSTRUCTION?

Library instruction integrates aspects of information literacy and metaliteracy by fostering critical thinking, self-reflection, and digital/media literacy. It encourages learners to reflect on their information-seeking processes, collaborate with others, and recognize the influence of media and technology on their understanding of information. The goal is to empower students to become confident, independent, and discerning users of information in all contexts.

Whether it's through workshops, one-on-one help, or online research guides, our aim is to make sure students feel confident and capable when navigating both physical and digital libraries.

WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?

Information literacy instruction is all about helping people learn how to find, use, and evaluate information effectively. It includes teaching skills like searching for books and articles, using online databases, and understanding the ethics of information use.

WHAT IS METALITERACY?

Metaliteracy is a framework which acknowledges that everyone can create, share, interact with, and use information in today's connected world. It covers a wide scope of skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving related to information in all forms and from all sources; it challenges traditional skills-based approaches to information literacy by recognizing related literacy types (digital, media, etc.) and incorporating emerging technologies. Additionally, it challenges the learner to consider their own role in information-seeking and producing, beyond merely consuming it.
